The Science of Product Layering

Layering is the “science” where you add layers of skin care products with a specific order of application.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many different types of products? Creams, serums, oils, exfoliants, toners? And why each one needs to be applied in such a specific order?

That is because, the layering science is dependant on size, the different ingredients’ molecular size, that is. The size of a compound’s molecules, or the molecular weight, directly affects the way the compound will penetrate and react with your skin.

Different types of products and ingredients have different molecular sizes. It is important to always use these products in the correct order.

We recommend that you layer your routine as follows
1) Toner
2) Water serum
3) Water free serum
4) Oil Serum or Moisturiser
5) Sunscreen

Remember that ingredients can be reactive to external forces. To get the best results from them, we must take this into consideration. Retinoids, for example, become inactive when exposed to sun light. Therefore, it is recommended to be applied at night only.
