Mandelic Acid
Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. Its molecular size is larger than glycolic acid and lactic acid - a structural difference that determines how quickly it penetrates the skin. Slower penetration means a gentler exfoliating action and a significantly lower risk of irritation, making mandelic acid the AHA most consistently recommended for sensitive skin and for melanin-rich skin tones prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
Why PIH changes the acid equation: In South African skin - predominantly Fitzpatrick types III to VI — melanocytes are more active and more easily triggered by inflammation. This means that an acid which causes even mild irritation can leave a dark mark that takes months to fade. Glycolic acid, with its small molecule and fast penetration, carries a higher irritation risk on deeper skin tones. Mandelic acid's gentler action reduces this risk substantially. It also acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor - blocking the enzyme that drives melanin overproduction - which means it simultaneously addresses existing dark marks while reducing the formation of new ones.
What mandelic acid treats: uneven skin texture, post-acne dark marks, mild congestion, and dullness. With consistent use over 4–6 weeks, most users see noticeably smoother texture and a more even tone.
How to use it: Apply to clean, dry skin in the evening, starting 2–3 times per week. Increase frequency as your skin builds tolerance. Do not layer with other AHAs, BHAs, or retinol in the same routine. Always apply SPF the following morning — all AHAs increase photosensitivity.
Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and pregnancy-safe when used topically at standard concentrations.
Frequently asked questions:
How does mandelic acid compare to glycolic acid? Glycolic has a smaller molecule that penetrates faster, delivering stronger exfoliation but with higher irritation risk - especially on darker skin tones. Mandelic is gentler, pigment-inhibiting, and safer for melanin-rich skin. For South African skin prone to PIH, mandelic is almost always the better starting point.
Can I use mandelic acid with niacinamide? Yes. Niacinamide and mandelic acid are compatible and work well together — niacinamide's barrier-supporting and brightening action complements mandelic's exfoliation.
How long until I see results? Skin texture improvements are typically visible in 2–3 weeks. Dark mark reduction requires 6–8 weeks of consistent, SPF-protected use.
